What if…?

(Disclaimer: if you’re looking for nuggets of food related wisdom…stop reading! Sometimes ‘Grandmas’ have other nuggets of wisdom that have nothing to do with food. Just food for thought)

I was perusing Facebook this morning and ran across a post by a woman who started a group for business owners because, as she put it, “eventually your families’ eyes start to glaze over whenever you start talking about your business” …and who knows the challenges a business owner faces except someone else in his or her shoes. Since that sounded pretty interesting to me, I made an application to join the group.

As I was getting ready for work, the thought crossed my mind. What if…? What if… that ONE contact let me to a marketing idea that caused my business to explode. What if…I met someone in that group that led to a great career/job/contact/(enter your word here)? What if…by listening to others ideas and challenges I learned to overcome some of my own?
In other words, what if…you DON’T take that moment…that opportunity to reach out beyond your little box and make another connection? It doesn’t have to be a Facebook group. It could be someone at church you find fascinating, someone in school that you find interesting, a business contact that you’ve been meaning to call, or an invite you can’t quite decide whether you want to accept.

Several years ago, a friend invited me to a business meeting. I have never been a real outgoing person in that type of setting – away from the things and people I know and was comfortable with. I went. I ended up joining the group and met some fascinating people that I would call friends today. It not only allowed me to open up, learn to be slightly (only slightly!) less intimidated by public speaking and meeting complete strangers, but it led to a LOT of opportunities that I never knew existed or were available to lil’ ol small town me.

That was a few short years ago. Today I no longer work 15-hour days, started a new business, and am taking classes toward a completely different career path. What if…. I hadn’t taken that opportunity.

What if…. YOU don’t take the next opportunity available to you? It may not always work out, but what if… you don’t try?

As I was walking through Meijer the other day, a stranger stopped me and asked if she could ask me a question.  I assured her she could, but I didn’t know if I could help.  Her question was whether I knew where to buy Red Hots…Boy, did I have an answer for her!  “Do you know where Rossville is,” I asked?  I just ‘happen’ to own Grandma’s Cupboard, and we just ‘happen’ to sell Red Hots.  She was from Mulberry, which is only about 8 miles away, so hopefully I solved her problem.

Anyone that has looked for Red Hots has probably had the same frustration.  They aren’t easy to come by, and when you do find them they are in these tiny little packages, so you have to buy several to get what you need.  Another thing I’ve noticed is that the flavor isn’t as strong as the brand we sell at Grandma’s Cupboard.

Red Hots are a versatile food.  You can suck on them as candy, make cooked apples (one of my new favorites that my BFF Julie taught me how to make) or melt them into desserts.  Red Hot Applesauce Jello Salad was on the Hufford Sunday dinner table many times while I was growing up.  (recipe below).  It can be frozen in individual cups for a refreshing summer dessert, molded into a ring mold and serve cottage cheese in the middle (cool whip would be good, too), or just let it set up in a pretty serving dish.  If you are serving multiple parties and have a lot left, I’ve even heard that you can re-melt the jello, pour it into a different bowl and let it reset.  No one knows they are getting leftovers!

One thing is for sure.  I’m never disappointed when Red Hot Applesauce Jello Salad is on the table.  Try it for yourself:

Red Hot Applesauce Jello Salad

½ cup Red Hots (also known as Cinnamon Imperials)

1 ¾ cup Boiling Water

1 sm Box Cherry or Strawberry Jello (also available (in bulk) at Grandma’s Cupboard)

1 cup Applesauce

Directions:  Dissolve red hots in boiling water.  Stir in Jello.  Cool.  Stir in applesauce.  Yeild: approx. 3 ½ cups  Double the recipe for a nice size serving bowl or most ring molds.

I have always felt fortunate that I was able to get to know all of my grandparents as I was growing up.  My dad farmed with his dad so we got to see a lot more of the grandparents on his side.  But they both had an important part of my childhood and ‘growing up’ years.  There are a lot of ‘favorite’ things to remember about going to the grandparents.  My Grandpa Hufford had an orchard and drove the school bus.  I remember jumping in the leaves from the apple trees, grandma making dried apples, and the marble roller that grandpa made,  to name just a few.  When visiting the grandparents on my mom’s side there were lots of games of Andy Over, dropping things through the register onto the adults in the living room, grandpa making us ‘fish’ for our presents through the transom over the door, and reading the Bible at the breakfast table when we stayed overnight.

There was one common thing that happened at both grandparents’ houses… there was always a candy dish… and  I don’t remember a time when there wasn’t something in it.  At Grandpa Blochers’, when Grandma Dorothy was alive, it was always ‘pink candies.’  Us grand-kids fondly called them ‘Pepto-Bismol candy’ ?  When Grandma Ruth came along it changed to gummy orange slices and peanuts.  At Grandpa Hufford’s it was hard candy and sometimes peanuts.  Today my mom keeps the tradition alive.  It’s not unusual to find someone’s hands in the Candy Dish when we are all together!

At Grandma’s Cupboard we are also keeping the tradition going.  At the cash register you’ll find a candy dish with some surprises in it.  I can’t say whether it’ll be Pepto-Bismal candies or orange slices, but it will always be something yummy.
